The circuses was where people came and watched people fight to death and got free grain. There were a few different kinds of fights. There would be people agains other people animals against people and animals against animals. The people who fought here were called gladiators. The gladiators ended up in these fights for a number aof reasons. They weren't happy with their life, they had broken a law and this was their sentence, or they were a prisioner of Rome. There were many types of animals. There were lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes, and many more. These fights were held at a place called the colosseum. These fights did cause a few problems. The Roman Empire was runing out of animals and a lot of species were near extinction, and Rome had to start trading goods for animals from the other empires. Another problem was when the christian religion started to grow. Christians beleived in peace and these fights were not peacful. The gladiator fights were not the only kinds of circuses that Rome had. They also had the chariot races. Teams would dress up in different colors and drive chariots with horse pulling them and then would race. Thes races were held at the Circus Maximus which is latin for large circus.
